Toberman House Youths Named
Mr. and Miss San Pedro
by Paul Clinton, June 4, 2006
The San Pedro Lions' Club named two youths affiliated with
Toberman Neighborhood Center as its Mr. and Miss San Pedro of
the year.

The nonprofit charity gave the honor to 13-year-old Celene
Orozco and 14-year-old Markus Waters, who raised the most furnds
in a raffle-ticket sales drive.
Orozco sold $1,600 in tickets, while Waters sold $1,200 worth.
Orozco organized two car-wash events at Toberman, where she
has been getting after-school homework help since she was in
elementary school. She now attends Dodson Middle School.
"It feels good to win," Orozco said. "I was
really happy."
Orozco also sold tickets at gas stations and taco stands in
Harbor City.
Waters took a similar approach.
"I did a lot of work," Waters said. "Toberman
helped me a lot. i really appreciate it."
Proceeds raised from the sale of the tickets will be divided
three ways. The club collects 40 percent and gives 10 percent
to Toberman Neighborhood Center. The remaining half was given
to the youths as a scholarship for college.
"I wanted to make money for my college, because I want
to be a doctor when I get older," Orozco said. "I
think I will succeed in it."
The two competed with five other students representing various
aspects of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor. Waters
attends Dana Middle School.
The club announced the winners at a May 25 dinner at Ante's
Restaurant, 729 S. Palos Verdes St.
