San Pedro, CA– Toberman Neighborhood Center Inc. has joined #GivingTuesday; a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Toberman Neighborhood Center is launching the ‘Helping Hands’ campaign in efforts to sponsor 200 kids in after school programs for 1 year.
#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Occurring this year on December 1st Toberman is asking you to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire friends and family to lend a “Helping Hand.” Spread the word to collaborate in improving your local communities and to give back in an impactful way to the charities that have continually given hope, education, empowerment, courage, and a chance to change a life.
What it means to lend a “Helping Hand.” Typically when asked for a favor by a close friend or family member, the word “Yes” escapes our mouths before the daunting question of “How? What? When? Where? And Why?” However when a charity or non-profit asks, it seem that most people try to prolong and avoid an answer; but why? Some may see it as an inconvenience, others as a way to avoid a mailing list; but, kids at Toberman see it as a chance to learn, succeed, and as a foundation to a world of kindness. Toberman Neighborhood Center has been servicing the San Pedro/ Harbor Area for decades, with services based around the community’s needs. What once started out as a settlement house in Echo Park has blossomed into its proud campus built solely to encourage, empower, support, and motivate the curious minds of San Pedro’s youth.
Toberman currently services over 100 youth in their after-school program at next-to-nothing cost for parents. The program for one month costs the non-profit $250 per child, to provide transportation from school to Toberman where they meet with a teacher for homework assistance, literacy enhancement, outdoor recreation, team work, confidence building, art projects and exploration, and last but not least a healthy dinner before closing at 6pm. Last year parents were charged $80 per child per month with financial assistance for those who qualified. This year Toberman has noticed the demand for child care has risen but income hasn’t changed in the surrounding neighborhoods; and decided to drop prices to $20 per child per month.
This #GivingTuesday Toberman’s goal is to sponsor 200 kids in the after-school program for 1 year, which totals to $500,000. December 1st, 2017 lend a ‘Helping Hand’ to sponsor a growing mind, a brighter future, and a family in need.
