Youth Services

Ages 10-16 years old

Toberman Youth Services provides a balanced after-school program where, in addition to homework assistance, students engage in athletic and fitness activities, participate in music, arts and crafts, and enjoy a variety of enrichment opportunities to explore their own creativity.

The afternoon's activities are designed to reinforce skills and concepts introduced during the regular school day by providing homework assistance from Toberman staff and volunteer tutors. The implementation of the EdBoost Program, developed by Dr. Tiffani Chin, provides Toberman staff with an assessment tool that identifies each student's academic strengths and weaknesses. Educational materials are then produced to address the specific areas of improvement needed, as identified by EdBoost, for each of our students. This individualized approach allows students to turn a weakness into a strength, adjusting learning strategies to keep themselves on track academically.

Through gender-specific and co-ed life skills and leadership development programs, students address such contemporary issues as drugs, racism, anti-gang involvement, sexism, poverty, higher education, careers, reproductive health, nutrition and fitness. As a result, they build self-esteem, self-confidence, develop social skills and make new friends - all in a safe, nuturing environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Youth Services provides all clients, ages 10 to 16 one-on-one case management focusing on the guidance and support needed to meet the academic, financial and testing requirements for admission to an institution of high learning. Youth Services participates in the Cash for College Program.
